Sunshine was born with a ventricular septal defect, a form of congenital heart disease. It occurs when there is a hole between the 2 pumping chambers of the heart. Her mom, Sayne, says that the condition was discovered during the 5-month of her pregnancy. At 3 months of age, Sunshine had open heart surgery. For the most part, the surgery went well; however, the next day Sunshine went into cardiac arrest and was without oxygen for 10 minutes. Over the next 4 days she had multiple seizures and was intubated for 11 days. Sayne was told that Sunshine would probably not survive. Fast forward – Sunshine has been receiving therapy for 2 years and is now receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatment with Dr. Harch. She has been seizure free, and her mom says, “It has, and will be, a long road but with God’s help, perseverance, dedication and effort, she will move forward.” The family spent 73 nights at RMHC.
